"Syd hates these trips to the West Coast. You can’t get a decent veal sandwich and just yesterday he met a woman who lived on a houseboat in False Creek who gave her two Abyssinian kittens bimonthly fish-oil enemas. Guys walked around downtown carrying waterproof briefcases and wearing flip-flops. How could you do business with these people when their hair-tufted toes were showing?" Z. Gartner (2011)
A delicious discovery from todays writers fest.

I still listen to good music, though. The Decemberists, Dirty Projectors, Nouvelle Vague, Beirut, Belle and Sebastian, Tears for Fears. I listen to all of them—in my house. When I leave my house though, I usually don’t bother bringing my iPod and instead I just put on the radio in my car and kind of just listen to whatever’s popular—but I do it ironically. You should have seen how people looked at me the other day when I was parking my Focus blasting that new Linkin Park song from the Transformers soundtrack. They totally didn’t get it. From “You look at me like you’ve never seen a neo-hipster before”. So much funny over at McSweeney’s here

One day, I’ll submit a grant without the 11th hour insanity. Until then, time to recover from that which preceded today at Friday at 5pm.

I’d put this on my Christmas wish list but for this book, patience is not an option.

Ultimately, however, our personal moments of distress won’t matter much unless our government intervenes with occasional mentions of climate change in important speeches, or by passing nonbinding legislation on the subject. I implore you: Spend a couple minutes each year imagining yourself writing impassioned letters to your elected representatives demanding a federal cap on emissions.

The Onion: We Need To Do More When It Comes To Having Brief, Panicked Thoughts About Climate Change (here). This would be (even) funnier if it weren’t quite so true…
